Self Drive Insurance
Compare self drive insurance from 200+ UK insurers. Tailored cover, free quotes in minutes. FCA regulated broker since 1983.
Self-drive hire operators need a specialist motor policy that extends cover to hirers — ordinary fleet insurance does not — with driver criteria, deposit arrangements and hire agreements that satisfy the insurer. The details that decide claims are the hirer checks you ran and whether the hire agreement was signed properly.
Cover this trade usually needs
| Cover | Why it matters | Typical limit |
|---|---|---|
| Self-drive hire motor cover | The vehicles with hirers as permitted drivers | Full fleet values |
| Public liability | Injury or damage at your premises and during handovers | £5m usual |
| Employers' liability | Legal requirement for staff | £10m (legal minimum £5m) |
| Legal expenses | Disputes with hirers over damage and deposits | Standard £100k legal costs |
| Premises and contents | The yard, office and equipment | Full replacement value |
Key risks
- A hirer crashes the vehicle — accident frequency is structurally higher than owned fleets.
- A vehicle is stolen by a hirer using false documents.
- Damage disputes with hirers over deposits.
- A hirer uses the vehicle outside the agreed terms — abroad, for hire and reward, off-road.
- An uninsured driver takes the vehicle because checks were skipped.
Regulations and licences
- Driving licence checks for every hirer — the DVLA share-code system.
- Road Traffic Act requirements for hired vehicles.
- Consumer contract rules for hire agreements.
- Data protection for hirer records.
What we check before quoting
- The fleet — cars, vans, minibuses, prestige or specialist vehicles, each rated differently.
- Your hirer criteria: minimum age, licence history, points, residency.
- The checking process — licence share codes, ID, deposits.
- The hire agreement terms and who drafted them.
- Any overseas use permitted.
Gaps we see most often
- Hirer checks not done or not documented — the insurer's conditions require them.
- Driver criteria on the policy stricter than your actual practice.
- Overseas use not declared.
- Prestige or specialist vehicles on a standard self-drive policy.
Limits clients and contracts usually ask for
- Public liability £5m.
- Employers' liability £10m (the legal minimum is £5m).
Key facts and sources
- HSE states that health and safety law applies to work on the road in the same way as on a fixed site, for company and grey fleet vehicles alike. HSE — Driving and riding safely for work
Common questions
- Does my fleet policy cover customers driving the vehicles?
- No — ordinary motor fleet insurance covers your named or criteria-based drivers, not paying hirers. Self-drive hire is a specialist class where the policy extends to hirers who meet the agreed criteria. Hiring out on a standard fleet policy is uninsured.
- What checks must I run on hirers?
- The policy conditions set them: typically a DVLA licence check via share code, photo ID, proof of address, and a deposit. The checks must be documented for every hire — after an accident, the insurer asks for the hire file first.
- A hirer crashed and their details were false — am I covered?
- If you ran the required checks and the documents were convincing fakes, the policy generally responds. If the checks were skipped, it may not. The checking process is not admin — it is the condition your cover depends on.
- Can hirers take vehicles abroad?
- Only if the policy allows it and you have issued the right documents — a VE103 vehicle-on-hire certificate is required for taking a hired vehicle abroad. Declare overseas use; it changes the cover.

What self drive cover typically includes
- Public liability — third-party injury or property damage claims, typically £1m–£10m of cover
- Employers' liability — legally required if you employ staff, £10m minimum
- Professional indemnity — where applicable, protecting against allegations of negligent advice or service
- Contents, stock and equipment — fire, theft, accidental damage and breakdown
- Buildings cover — if you own or are responsible for the premises
- Business interruption — loss of income while you can't trade
- Product liability — claims arising from goods supplied
- Cyber liability — increasingly essential for any business taking card payments or storing customer data
Why brokered cover beats price-comparison sites
Comparison sites push you toward the cheapest premium, not the policy that pays. Premier's brokers read the policy wording, flag exclusions before you buy, and fight your corner at claim time.
