Sports Insurance UK
Specialist UK sports insurance for clubs, teams, leagues and individual athletes — public liability, equipment, injury and event cover from 200+ insurers.
What does sports insurance cover?
Sports insurance is a specialist combined policy for clubs, teams, leagues, governing bodies, coaches and individual athletes. It bundles public liability for spectator and participant injury, professional indemnity for coaching advice, equipment cover, personal accident for players and officials, employers' liability where coaches or staff are paid, and event cancellation for tournaments and competitions.
Public and participant liability
Public liability (£5m–£10m) covers third-party injury and property damage claims arising from your sporting activities — spectator injuries, damage to hired venues, third-party property damage from equipment. Participant-to-participant cover is the section most generic policies miss: it responds when a player is injured by another player in normal play, where the standard exclusion of "claims by one insured against another" would otherwise bite.
Professional indemnity for coaches and instructors
Coach PI covers claims that coaching advice, programming or supervision caused injury or under-performance — particularly important for personal trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, swim teachers, ski instructors and any coach working with junior, elite or rehabilitating athletes.
Equipment, kit and pavilion cover
Cover for owned and hired sports equipment, club kit, pavilion contents and groundskeeping plant against fire, theft and accidental damage. We size limits to the actual replacement cost of the kit (which clubs frequently underestimate — a senior cricket club's bowling machines, covers and ground-care equipment regularly sits at £25k+).
Personal accident and event cancellation
Personal accident for players, officials and volunteers pays weekly benefit for temporary disablement and a lump sum for permanent injury or death — usually written on a 24-hour basis covering accidents during and outside of sport. Event cancellation covers irrecoverable costs and lost income if a tournament, competition or fixture is abandoned for covered reasons including adverse weather, venue unavailability and (in some wordings) communicable disease.
Common questions about sports insurance
Do amateur clubs need insurance?
Yes. Most NGB affiliations require minimum public liability cover, and most council and school venues require evidence of PL before they will allow you to hire. Personal accident is also strongly recommended for any club with junior members.
Does the policy cover contact sports?
Cover for rugby, boxing, MMA, BJJ, judo and other contact sports is available but requires specialist placement — generic leisure policies frequently exclude them. We place contact-sport cover with insurers who underwrite the risk properly, including sparring, competition and away fixtures.
Are coaches covered if they are self-employed?
Self-employed coaches working under the club's direction usually need to be named on the club's policy or carry their own professional indemnity and public liability. We help clubs structure cover so that volunteers and self-employed coaches are protected without inadvertently triggering employers' liability disputes.
What about events with paying spectators?
Paid-ticket events change the rating and frequently the cover required — venue contracts, alcohol service, stewarding standards and crowd-management plans become part of the underwriting. Event cancellation cover should be considered for any event where ticket revenue or sponsor commitments are at risk.
