What does TV and film production insurance cover?
Production insurance is a bundled policy covering the equipment, cast, crew, locations, sets and deliverables of a film, TV, commercial or branded-content shoot. A properly placed programme covers hired-in and owned camera kit, cast non-appearance, props, sets and wardrobe, faulty negative or media, errors and omissions (E&O), public liability at locations and statutory employers' liability for crew — single shoot, annual DICE or feature-film basis.
Equipment — owned and hired-in
Hired-in equipment is usually the largest single exposure on a shoot: an Arri Alexa or Sony Venice package with prime lenses, follow-focus, monitors, lighting and grip can sit at £150k–£500k for a single day. Cover responds for accidental damage, theft (including from unattended vehicles where conditions are met), water damage and shipping. Owned equipment covers your own kit on the same basis. We benchmark deductibles and "unattended vehicle" clauses carefully — those are the wordings that most often cause partial declines.
Cast insurance
Cast insurance covers the additional production costs if a named insured performer (and sometimes director or DOP) is unable to perform due to illness, injury or death — additional shoot days, standby crew, re-shoots, set rebuilds. Medicals are typically required for leads above a threshold value; pre-existing conditions are excluded unless specifically negotiated.
Props, sets, wardrobe and negative/faulty stock
Props, sets and wardrobe covers loss or damage to bespoke set builds, hired or made costumes, and props on hire from prop houses. Negative / faulty stock and media covers re-shoot costs where recorded footage is lost, corrupted or destroyed — including drive failure, camera fault and accidental wipe, subject to the camera-test conditions in the wording.
Errors & omissions (E&O)
E&O is the broadcaster / streamer / distributor requirement. It covers claims arising from the finished deliverable — defamation, breach of copyright, music and image clearance failures, trademark infringement, breach of privacy, plagiarism allegations. BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky, Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+ all require evidence of E&O (usually £1m–£5m) before they will accept delivery.
Public liability, employers' liability and contingency
Public liability (typically £5m–£10m) covers third-party injury and property damage at locations — essential for any location agreement. Employers' liability (£10m, statutory) covers all crew including freelancers working under your direction. Where a financier requires it, we can arrange contingency / completion cover for additional production costs caused by perils outside cast and equipment — adverse weather, civil authority, named-storm and (in some wordings) communicable disease.
Common questions about TV and film production insurance
Can I insure a single shoot rather than a whole year?
Yes. We arrange single-production policies covering pre-production, principal photography and post — and annual DICE programmes (Documentary, Industrial, Commercial, Educational) for working production companies that shoot continuously.
Is Errors & Omissions required?
For broadcaster and streamer deliveries, yes. BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky, Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+ require E&O of £1m–£5m before they will accept delivery. We place E&O directly with the markets that satisfy the major broadcaster contracts.
Do you cover drone and aerial filming?
Yes. CAA-approved drone operators can be added to public liability and equipment cover, and we place dedicated aerial filming policies where required by the production or the broadcaster.
