Electricians insurance — PL, EL and CCC cover for sparkies

Electricians need broader liability cover than most trades because the consequence of a wiring error is often fire — and a fire that destroys the building you're working on triggers a chain of property damage, business interruption and contents claims that can run into seven figures. Premier Insurance has arranged electricians cover since 1983 for sole-traders, NICEIC / NAPIT firms, commercial M&E contractors, EV-charger installers and renewable / solar electricians.

Electricians insurance cover

  • Public liability £2m–£10m with fire damage cover (essential)
  • Care, custody & control — for damage to the property you're working on
  • Employers' liability £10m including apprentices and trial workers
  • Tools cover
  • Contract works / contractors all risks for first-fix and second-fix in progress
  • Professional indemnity for design, EV-charger or solar specification
  • EICR / inspection liability bolt-on if you sign off certificates

Typical electricians insurance pricing in 2026

  • Sole-trader domestic electrician: £24.00–£48.00/mo with £2m PL
  • NICEIC sole trader doing rewires: £32.00–£68.00/mo
  • Commercial / industrial electrician (3-phase): £85.00–£185.00/mo with £5m PL
  • EV-charger installation specialist: £55.00–£140.00/mo (add PI £25–£60/mo)
  • M&E contractor (5–15 staff): £280.00–£650.00/mo

The EICR signing-off exposure

If you sign Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs) for landlords or commercial property, you carry a professional indemnity exposure on top of your public liability. A wrongly-passed EICR followed by a fatal fire produces claims that PL alone will not respond to — the loss is professional advice, not physical damage caused by you. We always add a PI element for electricians doing EICR sign-offs.
