Road risks vs combined motor trade insurance explained — what each covers, who needs premises cover, and the gaps that catch traders out at claim time.

Road risks vs combined motor trade insurance: which do you need?

Every motor trade policy starts with the same fork in the road: road risks only, or a combined policy? Choosing wrong in either direction costs you — either you pay for premises cover you don’t need, or you discover after a fire, theft or injury claim that your road-risks policy never covered the thing that just went wrong.

What road risks insurance covers

Road risks is the foundation of every motor trade policy. It allows you (and named drivers) to legally drive vehicles you don’t own — customer vehicles, stock, part-exchanges, vehicles collected from auction. Cover is usually available at third party only, third party fire and theft, or comprehensive level, with a maximum indemnity limit per vehicle.

That’s it. Road risks covers the driving. It does not cover your premises, your tools, vehicles stored at your address beyond the policy terms, liability claims from visitors, or your employees. It’s the right product for a genuine home-based trader or mobile operator — and the wrong product the moment you have a unit, staff or significant stock on site.

What a combined policy adds

A combined motor trade policy wraps road risks together with the rest of your operation:

  • Premises: Buildings (if you own them) plus fixtures, fittings and tenants’ improvements if you lease.
  • Contents, tools and equipment: Diagnostic kit, ramps, compressors, hand tools — often the single most underinsured element we see.
  • Stock of vehicles: Vehicles held for sale at the premises or in transit, typically on an all-risks basis up to a declared total.
  • Public liability: Injury or property damage claims from customers and visitors, usually £2m–£5m.
  • Employers’ liability: Legally required at £10m if you employ anyone — including part-time, casual and most sub-contract labour working under your direction.
  • Business interruption: Gross profit protection if a fire or flood stops you trading.

The grey area that catches traders out

The most common mistake we see is the “I work from home mostly” trader who actually stores two or three cars on the drive, keeps £8,000 of tools in the garage, and has customers dropping vehicles off daily. A road-risks policy may exclude vehicles at the home address beyond a stated number, won’t cover the tools, and won’t respond if a customer trips on the driveway and claims against the business.

At the other extreme, some traders with a small lock-up are sold full combined packages rated as if they run a main-dealer workshop. If your premises is modest and your tools are portable, a road-risks policy with carefully added liability and tools extensions is often the smarter — and cheaper — structure.

How insurers decide which you need

Underwriters ask simple questions: where do you trade from, do customers come to you, do you employ anyone, what’s the total value of stock and tools, and are vehicles kept overnight at the premises? Your answers dictate the structure. Be precise — “sometimes a car stays overnight” is very different from “ten vehicles on site every night” in rating terms, and in claims terms.

The claims test

The cleanest way to sanity-check your policy is to walk through three scenarios. One: a fire in your workshop destroys two customer cars and your diagnostic equipment. Two: a customer slips in your reception and breaks a wrist. Three: your best employee injures his back lifting a gearbox. A road-risks-only policy answers none of these. If any of the three keeps you up at night, you need combined cover — or at minimum, standalone liability and tools policies bolted on properly.
