Headline figures

- 43% of UK businesses identified a cyber breach or attack in the last 12 months, rising to 65% of medium and 69% of large businesses (Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2025/26).
- £6.1 billion paid out on UK property insurance claims in 2025, pushed up by adverse weather (Association of British Insurers).
- £22.9 billion estimated annual cost to Great Britain of workplace injuries and ill health (HSE).
- 1.9 million workers reported work-related ill health and 680,000 a non-fatal injury in 2024/25; 59,219 employee injuries were reported by employers under RIDDOR (HSE).
Underinsurance is the biggest UK insurance problem
Insurer research reviewing commercial property covers written in 2025 found around two-thirds of UK commercial properties were underinsured, with an average gap of 79% between the sum insured and the estimated rebuild cost. The average clause reduces a settlement in proportion to the shortfall, so a property insured at half its rebuild cost can receive roughly half of a partial-loss claim. Business interruption is the second gap: twelve-month indemnity periods remain common where a realistic recovery takes two to three years.
What UK business insurance costs
Indicative annual figures for a full programme: a low-risk sole trader typically pays £250 to £600; a small team with premises, stock and staff £1,200 to £3,500; a contractor with twenty staff and vans £8,000 to £22,000. Indicative annual public liability at a £5m limit ranges from around £95–£160 for a sole-trader consultant to £560–£980 for a sole-trader roofer. These are indicative ranges, not quotes, and no cover is bound online.
What moves a commercial premium
Ranked by impact: trade or occupation, claims experience, turnover and wage roll, sums insured, limit of indemnity, evidenced risk management, excess and payment method. Increasing public liability from £1m to £5m typically adds around 25–30% — far less than most businesses assume.
