Welders insurance — heat, hot-works and high-risk trade cover
Welding is classified as a high-risk trade by every major UK insurer. Hot works create fire exposure on every job, and you'll typically be required to comply with a hot-works permit condition, maintain a fire watch for 60 minutes after work stops, and have extinguishers to hand. Get the condition wrong and a single fire claim can be denied outright. Premier arranges welders insurance with the heavy-engineering and Lloyd's specialist markets that understand MIG, TIG, MMA, oxy-acetylene cutting and on-site repair work.
Cover for welders, fabricators & on-site repair
- Public liability £2m–£10m with hot-works wording reviewed in plain English
- Employers' liability £10m covering apprentices, labour-only contractors and trial workers
- Tools, plant & equipment cover including welders, generators and gas bottles
- Contractors all risks for fabrications in progress
- Goods in transit for materials and finished work
- Workshop / unit buildings & contents with appropriate fire warranty
- Product liability for fabricated items supplied to clients
Typical welders insurance pricing in 2026
- Sole-trader mobile welder (on-site repair only): £55.00–£115.00/mo
- Small fabrication workshop (1–4 staff): £180.00–£385.00/mo
- Structural steel fabricator (CE / EN 1090 marked): £450.00–£950.00/mo
- On-site welding for petrochemical / fuel-tank work: Lloyd's market only — £1,200/mo+
The hot-works warranty — the single biggest claim killer
Almost every welders policy carries a hot-works warranty requiring: a permit-to-work signed before each job; combustibles cleared or covered to 10m; two extinguishers within reach; and a fire watch for 60 minutes after work stops. Breach any condition and an arson-style claim (typical loss £80k–£400k) is denied entirely. We help you document a compliant procedure and, where possible, negotiate a "best endeavours" rather than "warranty" wording so a minor procedural slip doesn't void a major claim.
