Wrestlers, promoters and schools need public liability that covers participants and spectators, personal accident for performers, and employers' liability where staff are employed. A gap to check is a venue's or promoter's policy that excludes injury to the performers themselves.

Key facts and sources

Allocate ring, rehearsal and show responsibilities explicitly

Prepare a show file identifying the promoter, venue, ring supplier, production crew and person authorised to stop a performance. Keep ring assembly checks, access arrangements and an agreed incident reporting route with the event contract. For broker discussion, distinguish appearing as a booked performer from providing the ring or organising the show. A wrestler who also promotes events can hold several different responsibilities on the same evening, which a single description such as professional wrestling may conceal.

Record the planned performance format and how material changes are authorised, including audience interaction, elevated equipment or activity outside the ring. Keep rehearsal and briefing records without assuming that consent to participate settles every legal issue. Distinguish professional entertainment from amateur competition and from training beginners, because the operational arrangements and people exposed differ. Ask the broker to review the actual format and participant relationships rather than borrowing a sport description that does not match the event being staged.

Following an injury allegation, preserve available footage, the running order, contemporaneous accounts and equipment records while respecting privacy and medical confidentiality. Separate emergency assistance costs, damage to venue property, cancelled appearance fees and allegations by performers or spectators. Record whether the incident happened during assembly, rehearsal, the performance or dismantling. These distinctions help the broker examine responsibility and relevant policy sections without assuming that ordinary performance contact, equipment failure and spectator injury are interchangeable insured events.

HSE's event safety guidance provides planning and coordination context in Great Britain; it is not a wrestling governing-body rulebook or confirmation that participant injury is insured. Before introducing a new performance format, overseas booking or training school, describe the change and contracts to the broker. Ask specifically how the policy identifies the insured role, activities and people involved, keeping official event safety guidance separate from any exclusions or conditions in the actual insurance wording.

Common questions

Can wrestlers get insurance?
Specialist insurers may consider wrestling risks, subject to the activity, participants and underwriting criteria. Acceptance and cover are not guaranteed; check contact-sport and participant-injury exclusions.
Does the venue's policy cover me?
Usually not for injury to performers. Promoters and performers need their own cover.
Is personal accident cover worth having?
For performers who rely on bookings for income, it can pay while they cannot work.

What wrestlers cover typically includes

  • Public liability — third-party injury or property damage claims, typically £1m–£10m of cover
  • Employers' liability — legally required if you employ staff, £10m minimum
  • Professional indemnity — where applicable, protecting against allegations of negligent advice or service
  • Contents, stock and equipment — fire, theft, accidental damage and breakdown
  • Buildings cover — if you own or are responsible for the premises
  • Business interruption — loss of income while you can't trade
  • Product liability — claims arising from goods supplied
  • Cyber liability — increasingly essential for any business taking card payments or storing customer data

Why brokered cover beats price-comparison sites

Comparison sites push you toward the cheapest premium, not the policy that pays. Premier's brokers read the policy wording, flag exclusions before you buy, and fight your corner at claim time.
