Accidental damage home insurance — what it covers, what it doesn't, and the household types that actually claim against it.
Is accidental damage cover worth adding to home insurance?
Deciding whether to add accidental damage cover to your home insurance policy is one of those classic "risk versus reward" dilemmas. While it usually adds a modest extra cost to your annual premium, the peace of mind it offers can be invaluable when life’s inevitable mishaps occur inside your home.
At Premier Insurance, we’ve been advising UK homeowners since 1983. As an independent broker and a long-standing member of the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA), we’ve seen thousands of claims pass through our office. We know that understanding the fine print is the difference between an easy repair and an expensive out-of-pocket headache.
What exactly is accidental damage cover?
Standard buildings and contents insurance is designed to protect you against "major perils." These are events like fire, flood, theft, or subsidence. If a storm rips the tiles off your roof, your standard buildings policy steps in. If a burglar breaks your window, your contents policy usually has you covered.
However, standard policies often leave a gap when it comes to "the oops moments"—unforeseen actions that happen in an instant. Accidental damage cover is an optional extra that protects you against sudden, unintentional physical damage caused by you, your family, or even your pets (depending on the specific insurer). It is essentially the safety net for the clumsiness of daily life.
The two sides of the coin: Buildings vs. Contents
It is important to remember that accidental damage is typically split into two categories. You can often add it to either your buildings insurance, your contents insurance, or both.
Accidental damage for buildings
This covers the physical structure of your home, including fixed glass and sanitary ware. A common example we see is a homeowner putting a foot through a ceiling while retrieving suitcases from the loft. Another classic is "flick-mixing" a DIY project and accidentally drilling through a hidden pipe. Without this add-on, your insurer may argue that the damage wasn't caused by a specified peril like fire or flood, leaving you to pay the plumber and the plasterer yourself.
Accidental damage for contents
This is arguably the more popular choice because it covers the moveable items in your home. We’re talking about the glass of red wine tipped onto a cream wool carpet, or a child throwing a toy that cracks your 65-inch television screen. According to some industry data, accidental damage accounts for nearly 1 in 5 of all home insurance claims in the UK, with electronics and carpets topping the list.
What is usually excluded?
No insurance policy covers everything, and accidental damage is no exception. As FCA-regulated brokers, we always stress the importance of understanding the "General Exclusions" section of your policy document. In the UK market, you will almost never find a policy that covers:
- Wear and tear: If your sofa is fraying because it’s ten years old, that isn't an accident; it’s life.
- Defective workmanship: If you hire a cowboy builder who knocks over a wall they weren't supposed to, your accidental damage cover might not pay out because the damage was caused by poor trade work.
- Mechanical breakdown: If your washing machine simply stops working because the motor burned out, that’s a maintenance issue, not accidental damage.
- Pet damage (the grey area): Some insurers exclude damage caused by domestic pets, such as a puppy chewing a skirting board or a cat scratching a sofa. We always check the specific wording for our clients to ensure their four-legged friends are accounted for.
- Deliberate acts: If you break something in a fit of rage, it’s not an "accident" by the legal definition used in the insurance industry.
Is it worth the extra cost?
The cost of adding accidental damage varies significantly based on your postcode and the value of your possessions. However, for a standard three-bedroom semi-detached home, you might see it add between £2.00 and £4.50 per month to your total premium. In annual terms, you might be looking at an extra £30 to £50.
To put that into perspective, consider the cost of a modern 4K television or a professional carpet cleaning and restoration service. Replacing a high-end TV can easily cost £800 to £1,500. Comparing that to a £3.50 monthly "insurance tax" makes the add-on look like a very sensible investment for most households.
However, you must also consider your excess. If you have a £250 voluntary excess and you spill a bottle of ink on a rug that cost £200, it is not worth claiming. Accidental damage cover is most effective for "mid-to-high" value mishaps.
Who really needs this cover?
While every household is different, our experience at Premier Insurance suggests that certain demographics benefit from this cover more than others:
- Families with young children: From crayons on the walls to spilled juice on the PlayStation, children are walking "accidental damage" magnets.
- DIY enthusiasts: If you spend your weekends with a drill or a hammer, the risk of a "slip of the hand" causing structural or cosmetic damage is much higher.
- Remote workers: With more of us working from home, the risk of spilling coffee over an expensive laptop or monitor has increased exponentially.
- Owners of high-end finishes: If your home features expensive quartz worktops or specialist flooring, the cost of a single accidental chip or crack can be astronomical.
How to make a successful claim
If the worst happens, the UK insurance market operates on a principle of "utmost good faith." To ensure your claim is handled smoothly, we recommend following these steps:
1. Document everything: Take clear, high-resolution photos of the damage immediately. 2. Don't throw it away: Unless the item is dangerous (like shattered glass), keep the damaged item. The insurer may want to inspect it or send a loss adjuster to verify the claim. 3. Be honest about the timeline: Insurers look for "sudden and unforeseen" events. Trying to claim for a stain that has been there for six months as a "fresh spill" is considered fraudulent and could invalidate your entire policy.
Common questions and fine print
Does it cover my phone outside the house?
Generally, no. Accidental damage for contents usually only covers items while they are physically inside your home. If you want protection for your phone or camera while you're at the shops or on holiday, you typically need "Personal Possessions" cover or "All Risks" cover as a separate add-on.
Will a claim push my price up?
Yes. Even a small claim for a spilled glass of wine will likely result in the loss of some No Claims Discount (NCD) and a higher premium at renewal. This is why we suggest weighing up the cost of the repair versus the long-term cost of the premium increase before notifying your insurer.
Are there limits on "single items"?
Most policies have a single item limit (often £1,500 or £2,500). If you accidentally break a vase worth £10,000, your accidental damage cover will only pay up to that limit unless the item was specifically "specified" on your policy beforehand.
Deciding on the right level of cover can be complex, and white-label comparison sites don't always explain the nuances of these policy extensions. At Premier Insurance, we take the time to compare policies from over 200 different insurers. As an independent broker, we work for you—not the insurance company—to find the balance between robust protection and a fair price.
