How much does business insurance cost in the UK?
A sole trader doing low-risk work can be fully covered for £250 to £600 a year. A small team with leased premises, stock and employees typically spends £1,200 to £3,500. A restaurant or retailer with ten staff usually spends £3,000 to £8,000, a contractor with twenty staff and vans £8,000 to £22,000, and a manufacturer turning over £5m between £15,000 and £45,000.
What is actually compulsory
Only two business insurances are legally required in the UK: employers' liability of at least £5 million for almost every employer, and motor insurance for any vehicle used on the road. Everything else is either a contract requirement or a commercial judgement — although most clients, landlords and lenders insist on public liability, and regulated professions must hold professional indemnity.
Packaged versus piecemeal
A packaged commercial combined policy typically costs 10 to 12 per cent less than buying the same sections from different insurers, and removes the gaps where two policies meet — which is where declined claims cluster. The most under-bought cover in the UK market remains business interruption.
